Cantors: The role of "cantor" is an extremely important role in all liturgical experiences. This music minister is more than just a leader of song. The cantor is the "proclaimer:" of the psalms as well as the gospel acclamation and litanies. The cantor should be an instrument of hospitality responsible, confident and invitational, prayerful and pastoral, as well as being an accomplished vocalist. Vocal training and sight-reading capabilities are a definite plus as well as a joyful heart and willing spirit.
11:00 CHOIR: The St. Catherine of Siena Choir welcomes all adults and who have the desire to share their musical gifts with our community. There is a simple audition and new members are always welcome at any time throughout the year. Some music-reading ability is preferred. Although this group continues to sing throughout the summer, weekly rehearsals run only from September to June, at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening. If you love to sing, make wonderful new friends, and have fun, this is the group for you!
4:00 VIGIL CHOIR: This choir meets at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, prior to the 4:00 p.m. Mass for a simple rehearsal. We provide support in singing the hymns and Mass parts.
Funeral Choir: The funeral choir is a special group of music ministers who love to sing but are not required to commit to weekly rehearsals. This extremely important ministry is a wonderful way to not only praise God through sung prayer, but to also serve this community during a time of great need. The choir members have the wonderful opportunity to help support the bereaved families through their presence, prayers and music. No auditions are required but members do need to be available on short notice.
Ensembles: St. Catherine's Music Ministry has several ensembles of varying musical styles that also welcome and encourage new members. These groups have openings for many different types of instrumentalists and vocalists and welcome all different age groups. Members of these ensembles must have strong music reading ability. Music selections are typically performed in a more contemporary style but do range from traditional to contemporary, depending on the liturgy. The 9:00 a.m. group meets every other week on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. and each Sunday morning at 8:15 a.m. for rehearsal. The 6:00 Youth band meets at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon to prepare for the Mass.
Accompanists and Instrumentalists: The music ministry is always looking for accomplished pianists, organists, guitarists and other instrumentalists to help lead song at liturgy. These musicians must demonstrate strong skills in accompanying and sightreading, as well as having a strong knowledge of the flow of the liturgy.
