Our Holy Father Pope Francis has invited the Catholic Church to embark on a journey together. Through listening and discernment rooted in the Holy Spirit, the entire people of God will be called to contribute to a process by which the Church deepens in understanding of Her mission and looks toward the future. A Synod, which is the process by which the Church will begin this important work is not just a convening of Bishops reflecting on a particular topic and advising the Pope. A Synod is a journey of discernment, in which the people of God are called to pray and reflect upon the Holy Spirit’s will for the Church. Through our listening and our sharing, we will seek to understand what the Holy Spirit’s will is for the Church.
For the 2023 Ordinary Synod of Bishops, that topic is synodality. Simply put, synodality is discerning how the Spirit is moving through and with the Body of Christ, so that we may continue to fulfill our mission to evangelize in the world.

What is a Synod?
From the early years of Christianity, gatherings of members from the various Christian communities would take place to pray, listen, and discuss the issues flowing out of the numerous Christian communities that were scattered across the Mediterranean. Evidence for such gatherings can be found in the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 15, when discussions were held on the concerns over Gentile membership in these communities whose membership was both Jewish and Gentile. For the next 500 years, these gatherings continued as Bishops, from local communities, would travel to meeting places to share their concerns for the growing Christian faith throughout the known world.
With the growth of the Christian faith across the globe and the shift in the structure of the Church, this process of gathering fell more on the Hierarchy of the Church as Cardinals, Bishops and Pope would gather for Councils. In the mid-1960’s with the gathering at the Second Vatican Council and its emphasis on the Church being a “Pilgrim People of God, journeying together towards holiness” (Lumen Gentium #13), the early Church gatherings for prayer, listening, and discussion began to be used with more frequency throughout the global Church. It is within this spirit of calling a synod that Pope Francis has invited all of us to participate. Our Bishop Parkes believes this process to be a valuable one for our Diocese as well as for the Catholic, (also known as “Universal”) Church. Our gatherings at St. Catherine of Siena will assist all of us in listening and discerning the workings of the Holy Spirit in our midst. Our hopes and concerns will be taken by Bishop Parkes to a gathering of Bishops in Oct. 2022 and then beyond to a gathering in Rome in Jan. 2023. El papa Francisco nos invita a participar de un encuentro con un espíritu de convocación. Nuestro obispo Parkes cree que este proceso será valioso para nuestra diócesis, así como para la Iglesia Católica, también conocida como la Iglesia Universal. Nuestros encuentros en Santa Catalina de Siena nos ayudarán a escuchar y discernir sobre la obra del Espíritu Santo en medio nuestro.
El obispo Parkes llevará nuestras expectativas e inquietudes al Encuentro de Obispos de octubre de 2022 y luego a un encuentro con Papa Francisco en Roma en enero 2023.

¿Qué es un Sínodo?
Desde los primeros años de la Cristiandad, miembros de las diferentes comunidades cristianas realizaban encuentros para orar, escuchar y debatir sobre los temas que surgían en las numerosas comunidades cristianas que se esparcían a lo largo del Mediterráneo. Hay evidencia de que estos encuentros se llevaban a cabo en el capítulo 15 de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, que recoge las inquietudes sobre aceptar gentiles en los grupos cuya población incluía tanto a judíos como a gentiles. Por los próximos 500 años estos encuentros continuaron celebrándose a medida que los obispos provenientes de comunidades locales viajarían a lugares de los encuentros para compartir sus inquietudes sobre la creciente fe cristiana a través del mundo conocido.
A medida que la fe cristiana se esparcía y crecía por el mundo y la estructura de la Iglesia iba cambiando, este proceso de celebrar encuentros recayó más en la jerarquía de la Iglesia cuando cardenales, obispos y el papa se reunían en concilios ecuménicos.
